Who we are...
Uff-da organics is the home and work place of Adam and Jackie Kemp. Adam is responsible for most of what happens on the farm from day to day, but also works full-time for Northern Harvest Farm across the road. Jackie lends much of her good judgement and organizational skills to the farm, but most of her focus is on her work at One Roof Community Housing in Duluth, MN. Our daughter is three, we're still trying to get her to try strawberries.
Our start...
In 2013, we purchased 40 acres of land 3 miles south of Wrenshall township, a beautiful piece of agricultural land and a blank canvas of sorts. In the fall of the same year, we began homesteading and preparing several 1/2 acre fields. Before our arrival, our farm had been an open hay field for the three previous decades. All those years of taking hay off the land, had taken much of the soils nutrients as well. Although we knew with some time and care it could be a solid and productive foundation. We've been building on that foundation ever since. The hoes and the hammers did fly and we took up residency in the spring of 2015, opening for business the following year. It's been a lot of hard work, but every year gets easier and it's been endlessly gratifying to see the things we've been dreaming start to materialize, little by little, before us.
A spirit of collaboration...
Much of the progress we've made over the years is due to the incredible generosity of our friends and neighbors Rick and Karola Dalen. Adam got his start in farming as an intern on the Dalen's Northern Harvest Farm and has been growing great food with the Dalens for over a decade since. The experiences of these years has proven invaluable in shaping our own farm adventure, it's hard to overstate how much we've learned during this time. We're now living right across the road, Adam has continued working for Northern Harvest and we plan to work collaboratively going forward with the two business. As we've grown the Dalens have been a great help, lending expertise, equipment and allowing us to make use of their processing areas and cold storage. Our long term goal is to provide a full fruit share to compliment their vegetable CSA. We've got great neighbors!
